The Story

A bold new theatrical journey — from Hong Kong to the UK stage

This summer, acclaimed Hong Kong director Chan Chu-Hei arrives in London to lead an intensive three-week creative workshop, uniting performers from Hong Kong and those who have recently relocated to the UK.

Developed from an original concept by award-winning playwright Candace Chong Mui-Ngam, this ambitious new work delves into the often-unspoken stories of migration — stories carried across generations, oceans and shifting identities.

Set against the backdrop of a city steeped in history, Prophecies Yet to be Fulfilled – A Trilogy charts the fractured yet connected paths of a single family through three defining eras — from post-Cultural Revolution China, through the uncertain tides of Hong Kong, to the present-day UK. Each chapter captures the heartbreak and resilience of departure, illuminating the complex relationship between the personal and the political. For those who carry Chinese heritage, migration remains a question both timeless and urgent: is it driven by fate, or called forth by the currents of history?

Structured across dual timelines, the piece uses poetic monologues to move fluidly between past and present, inviting audiences to journey across time and place. While playwright Chong crafts a traditional narrative as a foundation, director Chan devises the production through improvisation with the acting ensemble, expanding and reimagining the text to bring fresh perspectives and open up exciting new creative possibilities.

This workshop marks the start of a significant new theatrical trilogy. Rooted in real stories and shaped by voices across continents, it is a work-in-progress that will develop and mature over the coming years — culminating in its premiere on UK stages.
